The IGN provided the Water Industry with background information and installation recommendations for zinc coated ductile iron pipe. The information represented the best presently available (in 1984). It explained: the reasons for spray application of a zinc metal coating; the application process; the mechanism of protection; service experience with zinc coated iron pipe; WRc research; installation recommendations; and references.
One or more ‘Common Editorial Caveats’ apply – see ‘WIS & IGN Library / Navigation & Caveats’ for details.
Based on the Standards Board’s enquiries (Autumn 2021) of stakeholders (BPF PG, FWA, UKSTT, PIG, PSE/10, PRI/88/3 & SRCG representatives) the consensus view is that the existing document should be archived & a new IGN prepared.
PSE/10 members stated that, with new innovations (e.g. zinc alloys), the IGN’s contents are well out of date. They recommended that a working group be set up to revise the document. There are UK experts in PSE/10 who have a long history and deep knowledge of zinc coating developments who would make a significant contribution to a revised IGN.
PSE/10 members felt it would be useful to include an explanation of how zinc coatings work. There is useful material in EN 545 (currently under review).
The January 2022 meeting of the Standards Board decided to invoke a public consultation on the archiving of IGN 4-51-01 and seek its revision, based on PSE/10 comments above.
